The Fire Inspector is a plan examiner. He reviews blueprint drawings and carries out site inspections of new construction involving fire safety equipment required by the Ontario Building Code. The inspector also conducts regular fire safety inspections of all types of occupancies defined by the Ontario Building Code. These inspections are carried out under the provisions of the Ontario Fire Code Fire Marshal's Act. In enforcing the Fire Code, the inspector may spend some of his time making court appearances.

The inspector carries out investigations of incendiary fires, explosions and fire fatalities. He responds to citizen complaints regarding fire safety concerns and is active in public education and other projects within the community.
