#1 LaFrance Pumper

LaFrance Pumper

  • 1923 LaFrance pumper.
  • Owen Sound Fire Department Engine No. 1.
  • 1923 Type 75 Triple Combination Pumping Engine.
  • 6 cylinder 105 H.P. gasoline engine.
  • 600 Imperial gallon pump.
  • 33 Imperial gallon soda-acid chemical tank.
  • 200 feet of 3/4-inch chemical hose.

Engine No. 1 was delivered to the Owen Sound Fire Department on June 11, 1923 by rail car from the American LaFrance Fire Engine Company of Canada Limited, Toronto, Ontario.

Still in running condition, Engine No. 1 is currently being restored by the members of the Owen Sound Fire Department. Restoration began when the fire department reacquired the truck from the County of Grey-Owen Sound Museum; the truck had been donated to the museum in 1972.

The truck is in great shape for an 80-year-old vehicle. It is still completely equipped including its original extinguishers and axes. The original wooden extension ladder and roof ladder are in excellent structural condition.

As of February 2003, Engine No. 1 has been stripped down to its frames with fenders, seat engine hood and hose body removed for minor repair and preparation for painting. The frame, engine, pump and transmission will all be powerwashed and prepped for a paint job. The goal to complete this during the summer of 2003. When the body panels have been repainted, they will be reattached to the truck.

The nickel plating on the headlights, spotlights, bell, handrails and various accessories will be done in phases as the restoration funds permit. The ornate gold leaf striping, scrollwork and lettering will be added, also as funds permit, matching the exact patterns still visible on the truck.

Once restored, Engine No. 1 will become an "ambassador" for the Owen Sound Fire Department as part of its fire prevention and education programs, public relations and, most importantly, as a working and vital piece of the history of the City of Owen Sound and the Fire Department and a source of pride for city residents.

Any financial assistance toward the restoration of Engine No. 1 will be gratefully received by the Owen Sound Fire Department. Tax receipts are issued for donations.
